UBC Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program
By Janet
Another Mastercard Foundation opportunity has been open at the University of British Columbia (UBC) to nurture the next generation of African leaders. The previous one supported over 171 scholars, and this next phase would provide access to quality university education to 351 academically talented young individuals.
Mastercard Foundation Scholars will have to use the experiences and knowledge garnered from their studies at the University of British Columbia to contribute to the economic and social transformation of their communities in Africa.
This is a great opportunity for Africa’s graduates to become leaders who are committed to enabling change through sustainable leadership and community-driven development. More details about this scholarship below:
The program supports young people in four key areas:
- Access & Thrive: The program empowers young people, particularly women, refugees, internally displaced persons, and individuals with disabilities, by providing high-quality education and tailored support designed to help them become transformative leaders who will drive inclusive socio-economic change in Africa.
- Community-Engaged Learning: UBC focuses on providing experiential education, allowing students to apply their knowledge to address pressing social and environmental challenges in collaboration with community partners. Phase 2 of the program will strengthen existing networks with partners in Africa, facilitating a smooth transition for scholars into meaningful careers.
- Dignified & Fulfilling Work: Scholars benefit from various support programs, including GradStart, faculty-focused orientations, and initiatives focused on student wellbeing and personal development.
- Agency & Voice: Scholars are provided with numerous hands-on learning opportunities and educational training to develop their skills, agency, and voice, preparing them for meaningful employment or entrepreneurship.
