University of Toronto Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program

Graduate students who desire to study at the University of Toronto, an opportunity is now available by the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program. It is a fully-funded scholarship and it would support these applicants during their graduate studies. The program is designed to empower scholars and engage in diverse healthcare professions and ecosystem across Africa.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars will be expected to return to their home countries after completing their studies. This is to ensure that they contribute to improving health outcomes through self-employment or work in various health-related fields.

About the Scholarship

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Toronto offers comprehensive support to citizens of Sub-Saharan Africa, granting access to advanced education at the graduate level.

Graduate Programs

For the 2025-2026 academic year, up to 25 scholarships will be awarded across the following graduate programs:

  • Master of Health Administration
  • Master of Occupational and Environmental Health
  • Master of Social and Behavioural Health Sciences
  • Master of Financial Insurance
  • Master of Engineering (Biomedical)
  • Master of Biotechnology (for the 2026 start)

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following six criteria:

  1. Be a citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country and currently residing there.
  2. Must have graduated within the past five years from a partner institution of the Africa Health Collaborative (as listed in the application materials) and have not yet begun graduate studies.
  3. Have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership potential during undergraduate studies.
  4. Be academically qualified for one of the eligible graduate programs listed above.
  5. Show a commitment to returning to their home country after graduation to contribute to economic and social development.
  6. Be willing to work or pursue self-employment in health-related fields upon returning home.

Scholarship Benefits

Recipients of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Toronto will receive full financial support throughout their graduate studies. This includes:

  • Travel expenses to Canada (including passport and visa fees)
  • Tuition fees
  • Housing and meals
  • Health insurance
  • A laptop and learning materials
  • Other living expenses

Application Process

Step 1:
Review the admission requirements for your chosen graduate program. Ensure that you meet the necessary academic qualifications before proceeding to the next step.

Step 2:
Register for a scholarship information session and submit your completed Mastercard Foundation Scholarship application. The deadline for submission, along with all required attachments, is Monday, November 4, 2024, at 12 noon (Toronto time).

If your scholarship application meets all criteria and is approved by the Scholarship Admission Committee, you will be notified via email in early December.

Step 3:
Once your scholarship application is approved, you can begin the formal graduate application to your selected department at the University of Toronto through the School of Graduate Studies website. Each department will provide specific requirements and deadlines for the submission of additional information, which will need to be uploaded online.
