Africans who are interested in pursuing postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom, the University of Essex Africa Postgraduate Scholarship is available for you. If you are self-funding your studies as an international African student, this scholarship is specifically made to support you.

Scholarship Details

  • The scholarship offers up to £4,500, applied as a discount on the student’s first-year tuition fee.
  • Awards are based on the grades obtained in the undergraduate degree, and all applications for relevant courses will be automatically considered.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The scholarship is open to students who are overseas fee payers and entirely self-funded (students receiving a repayable loan for their studies are considered self-funded).
  • Applicants must be ordinarily resident in a member state of the African Union.
  • Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree (including integrated Masters degrees) with the specified grades. A higher Masters grade cannot compensate for a lower Bachelor’s grade.
  • Applicants must register at the University of Essex in October 2024 or January 2025 for the first year of a full-time Masters course in the 2024-25 academic year, leading to degrees such as MA, MSc, LLM, MRes, MPP, MBM.
  • Scholarships may be awarded to those who have completed relevant studies in one of the specified African countries.
  • The scholarship cannot be combined with other University of Essex scholarships. If eligible for multiple awards, the student will receive the award of greater value.
  • The scholarship is for the first year of Master’s study at Essex only.
  • Successful applicants should be available for promotional activities.

Country Specific Requirements

  • Ghana: 2:1, or CGPA 3.0/4.0 or above
  • Nigeria: CGPA 3/5 or above
  • Other African Union member states: 2:1 or equivalent as defined by the University’s Postgraduate Admissions selection criteria.

Application Procedure

  • The scholarship is awarded during the admission process; no separate application form is needed.
  • Students will be automatically considered for the scholarship if eligible, based on the academic transcripts and certificates submitted with their application to the University of Essex.
