Biodiversity Media Grants for Journalists by Earth Journalism Network

Journalists who are interested in covering information on biodiversity in lower and middle-income countries, the Earth Journalism Network is offering the Biodiversity Media Grants to media organizations. This would strengthen journalist’s capacity in these countries.

The main aim of the Biodiversity Media Grants is to address the imbalance in media attention and funding between climate action and biodiversity conservation.

The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) will award three to four grants of 10,000 to 12,000 EUR to support projects that produce in-depth biodiversity stories, investigative collaborations, journalist training, or innovative media tools. Projects should focus on themes such as nature-based solutions, alternative conservation methods, digital sequence information, and the unintended effects of conservation measures.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Those eligible for the Biodiversity Media Grants include media organizations, journalist networks, academic institutions, and civil society groups affiliated with journalism.
  • Media organizations in countries classified as either low- or middle-income by the World Bank are eligible to apply for this grant. These classifications can be reviewed here.
  • Projects in biodiversity-rich regions of the world, or projects in countries facing unprecedented biodiversity loss will be supported.
  • Applications from NGOs or environmental groups looking to build the capacity of journalists to cover conservation issues will also be considered.
  • Applications rooted in advocacy or political campaigning will not be considered.
  • Applications written only in English language will be accepted. Applicants must have a working understanding of English or have a translator available to assist with communication with EJN staff.

Project Themes and Objectives

Projects funded by the Biodiversity Media Grants should build public awareness of the threats to biodiversity and highlight conservation solutions by spreading quality news and information, with a focus on audiences in lower- and middle-income countries. Projects can, but are not required to, also build the capacity of journalists and communicators to report on threats to biodiversity and on conservation solutions, by building their skills, knowledge and networks. For organizations proposing content production only, these activities must result in robust and in-depth outputs (for example, a series of podcasts, or a multi-part investigation). Applications that propose less than 10 stories will not be considered competitive, unless they also propose to include capacity-building activities as part of the project.
