Yale Drama Series Playwriting Competition

Playwrights across the globe, an esteemed annual contest is available for you by the Yale Drama Series Playwriting Competition. This competition is usually judged by renowned playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and it recognizes and supports emerging playwrights.

These new playwrights get significant rewards and exposure to solid connections that will enhance their career in the writing profession. The winner of the playwriting competition will receive the David Charles Horn Prize, which includes a cash prize of $10,000, a celebratory event, and the publication of their manuscript by Yale University Press.

Before this prize and publication awards can be presented to the winner, the playwright must agree to the terms of the publishing agreement. Check below for more details about this:

Eligibility Requirements

  • The submissions are accepted only in English language.
  • Submissions must be original, unpublished full-length plays, with a minimum length of 65 pages.
  • The following are not eligible: translations, adaptations, musicals, and children’s plays.
  • The Yale Drama competition is designed to support emerging playwrights, and each playwright can only win once.
  • Only one manuscript per playwright is allowed per year, and it must be authored by a single playwright.
  • Plays that have been professionally produced or published are not eligible. However, plays that have had a workshop, reading, or non-professional production, or have been published as an actor’s edition, will be considered.
  • Plays under option, commissioned, or scheduled for professional production or publication at the time of submission are ineligible.
  • Manuscripts must be typed or word-processed and page-numbered. Plays containing images are not accepted.
  • The Yale Drama Series reserves the right to reject any manuscript for any reason and may also decide not to choose a winner for any given year.

Submission Guidelines

Electronic Submissions:

  • Electronic submission is highly encouraged. By submitting electronically, you will receive immediate confirmation of your submission and be able to check its status.

Hardcopy Submissions:

  • If electronic submission is not possible, hard copies will be accepted. Hardcopy submissions must be postmarked between June 15, 2024, and September 8, 2024.
  • Each hardcopy manuscript should include a title page with the play’s title, playwright’s name, address, telephone number, email address, and page count. A second title page should include only the title of the play, a 2-3 sentence description of the play, a list of characters, and a list of acts and scenes. A brief biography should be included on a separate page at the end of the manuscript.
  • Manuscripts should not be bound or stapled, and it is advised not to send the only copy of your work as manuscripts cannot be returned.
  • If acknowledgment of receipt is desired, include an email address on the title page or a stamped, self-addressed postcard.
