Communication Interns Needed at Wilson Center

Are you an energetic and self-motivated student or a recent graduate interested in public policy, communications, and international affairs? Then the Wilson Center’s internship program is just for you.

The Wilson Center’s External Relations department needs individuals who would like to do a summer internship at their organization in Washington, D.C.

The Wilson Center is a prestigious organization in the world, and through the internship, participants will get hands-on experience with a wide range of issues influencing today’s public policy debates.

Internship Overview

The intern will be actively involved in the Wilson Center’s External Relations department, managing external communications for events, publications, media relations, and digital communications. Responsibilities include:

  • Researching and drafting blog posts
  • Writing press releases and media advisories
  • Crafting social media toolkits for the Wilson Quarterly
  • Monitoring media hits and developing communication strategies for highlighted events and projects
  • Assisting with website maintenance and media contacts databases

Additional tasks may be assigned as needed. Interns are typically selected for each academic term (Fall, Spring, and Summer) for approximately three to four months, though appointments can be made throughout the year for varying lengths, not exceeding one year. Interns are expected to commit to 25 hours per week onsite at the Wilson Center.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drafting posts for the website, including research, writing, and publishing via the content management system
  • Drafting press releases and media hits reports
  • Assisting with event registration and data cleanup
  • Creating social media toolkits for the Wilson Quarterly
  • Researching and optimizing photos for the website
  • Writing stories on Wilson Center alumni
  • Editing existing website and blog content
  • Preparing publications and outreach materials
  • Updating contact databases
  • Supporting administrative activities in the External Relations office

Qualifications

  • Strong research, writing, and administrative skills
  • Detail-oriented
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Currently enrolled in a degree program, recently graduated (within the last year), or accepted to enter an advanced degree program within the next year
