If your research is currently focusing on World Heritage and tentative listed sites in Africa, this opportunity is specifically for you as the Moses Mapesa Research Grants seeks to support students whose goal is to contribute to research on the natural and cultural heritage of Africa.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled or planning to enroll in a Doctoral or Masters program (Masters 2 for Francophone countries) at an African university in 2025, conducting dissertation research on natural or cultural heritage at an African World Heritage Site.
  • Be proficient in English, French, or Portuguese.
  • Hold citizenship in a Member State of the African Union that is a party to the World Heritage Convention.

Grant Details

The AWHF Moses Mapesa Research grant offers up to USD 5,000, with amounts varying based on the research proposal. Fieldwork must be completed within 9 months from the contract’s start date (May 2025 to February 2026). Research projects should focus on topics related to World Heritage or tentative listed sites in Africa, such as:

  • Traditional Management Systems
  • Risk Management and Preparedness
  • Heritage in Conflict and Post-conflict Situations
  • Heritage Management and Conservation
  • Heritage and Climate Change
  • Heritage and Economics/Entrepreneurship
  • Heritage and Sustainable Development
  • Heritage Promotion and Awareness
  • Heritage and Digital Technologies
  • Heritage and Law

Grant Requirements

Grant recipients must provide a detailed research description and proof of registration at the start of the grant. Upon completion, they must submit a final report with their research findings or dissertation/thesis, as well as a financial report. All documents should be in English, French, or Portuguese. The research must be completed within the 9-month period specified (May 2025 to February 2026). Failure to complete the research within this timeframe will require reimbursement of the grant.

Submission Deadline

The deadline for submissions is 17:00 (GMT) on July 31, 2024. Early submissions are encouraged. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
