The Miles Morland Foundation through this scholarship will provide financial assistance to you to give you enough time to focus on completing your literary works. This foundation was established in 2013, and its aim is to alleviate the challenges that African writers face in balancing writing and earning a living.

Scholarship Overview

The Morland scholarships are awarded annually and are open to writers who were born in Africa or whose both parents were born in Africa. Applicants must be writing in the English language. The primary objective of the scholarship is to enable each scholar to produce the first draft of a complete book during the scholarship period.

Grant Details

Each scholar receives a grant of £18,000, disbursed monthly over twelve months. Scholars working on non-fiction projects that require additional research time may receive an extended grant paid over up to eighteen months, at the discretion of the foundation.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must:

  • Submit an excerpt of between 2,000 to 5,000 words from a published work in English that has been offered for sale.
  • Provide clear evidence of publication and sale of the submitted work.
  • Demonstrate that they were born in Africa or that both of their parents were born in Africa.
  • Submit a description (400-1,000 words) of the new book they intend to write.
  • Provide a brief biography (200-300 words).
  • Specify how they learned about the Morland Writing Scholarships.

Evaluation Criteria

Submissions are evaluated based solely on literary merit. The scholarships do not support academic, scientific, religious, or political writings.

Scholarship Requirements

During the scholarship year, scholars are required to:

  • Focus on writing and submit at least 10,000 new words per month.
  • Complete the first draft of their book within the scholarship term. Payments continue if the draft is finished before the year ends, allowing time for editing and refinement.

Submission Guidelines

Applicants must submit:

  • A 2,000 to 5,000-word excerpt as a Word document from a published and sold work.
  • Proof of publication and sale.
  • A description of their proposed book.
  • An official document proving African heritage.
  • A brief biography.
  • Information on how they discovered the Morland Writing Scholarships.
