Harvard University Academy Scholars Program for PhD Students

PhD or comparable doctorate degree holders, the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies is providing you with an opportunity to join the Harvard University Academy Scholars Program.

This program focuses on supporting exceptional scholars at the beginning of their academic careers. These scholars should be able to demonstrate excellence in a social science discipline and possess expertise in languages of countries or regions outside the United States or Canada.

The research work of these scholars should cover traditional disciplinary boundaries. It should also focus on transnational, comparative, or domestic issues, past or present.

These Academy Scholars will be recognized for their initiative, originality and resourcefulness. They should also showcase a potential to build distinguished careers in research universities or international institutions.

Eligibility:

  • Open to recipients of PhD or comparable doctoral degrees (within two years of the August 1, 2025, start date) and advanced doctoral candidates in social sciences.
  • Candidates near dissertation completion must provide proof of degree conferral by June 30, 2025.

Program Overview:

  • Academy Scholars will undertake a two-year in-residence postdoctoral fellowship at The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies in Cambridge, MA, USA.
  • They will receive substantial financial and research support enabling robust project development and skill enhancement in their respective fields.
  • Interaction opportunities include dinners, seminars, and informal gatherings aimed at fostering innovative interdisciplinary approaches.
  • Mentoring will be provided by Harvard Academy Senior Scholars, who also participate in selection processes and Academy events to support Scholars in achieving their potential.

Terms:

  • Each year, five or six Academy Scholars will be appointed for two-year in-residence fellowships with an annual stipend of $80,000. The fellowship must be completed within a three-year timeframe, with the first year beginning in the fall immediately following the offer.

Application Process:

  • All materials must be submitted by the deadline of September 20, 2024. Late applications will not be considered.
  • Required documents include CV, research proposal (up to 2000 words), one scholarly writing sample (up to fifty pages), PhD program transcript, and three confidential letters of recommendation.
