Africa Institute Tejumola Olaniyan Creative Writers-in-Residence Fellowship

The Africa Institute is pleased to announce the opening of applications for the 2024 Tejumola Olaniyan Creative Writers-in-Residence Fellowship. This fellowship, part of the African Languages and Translation Program, honors the late Nigerian Professor Tejumola Olaniyan and his significant contributions to African literature and critical theory.

Requirements

  • Creative writers including novelists, short story writers, playwrights, poets, and scriptwriters related to Africa and the African diaspora are invited to apply.
  • Grant: 45,000 AED in total.
  • The proposed project can be in Arabic or English (other languages will be considered).
  • Recipients will be invited to Sharjah, UAE, for a three-month residency period to complete their work.
  • Cohort typically begins in the fall of each year.

Application Procedure

  1. Application Contents:
    • CV/résumé of the applicant
    • A two-page narrative outlining the project to be undertaken during the residency period, its significance, and proposed completion date.
    • A sample of published or unpublished writings.
  2. Compile all application materials into a single PDF in the specified order.
  3. Name the PDF file using the residency title abbreviation and the applicant’s name: TOCWRP_LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME.
  4. Send the PDF as an email attachment to applications@theafricainstitute.org. Use the same name in the email subject heading.
